// Paying For The Work //

How Payment Usually Works

The arrangements worth asking any contractor about before you agree to a job, and the question to put with each one.

// Four Arrangements //

Settle It Before The Work Starts

Which of these applies is a conversation, and it is a short one when it happens early.

Option 01

In full, on completion

The simplest arrangement: the work is done, you look at it, you pay. Common on shorter jobs where no materials have to be bought in ahead of time, and the one with the fewest moving parts.

Ask: when is payment due — on the day, or within a set number of days of the invoice?
Option 02

Deposit, then the balance

Part up front and the rest at the end. The deposit normally covers materials ordered specifically for your job, or holds a date. It is usual on anything that has to be bought in, and it should be written down with the rest of the price.

Ask: what does the deposit cover, and what happens to it if the job is cancelled or postponed?
Option 03

Staged payments

Payment released in steps tied to visible progress rather than to dates in a calendar. On a longer job it keeps both sides level — nobody is a long way ahead on money or a long way ahead on work.

Ask: what exactly has to be finished before each stage is payable, and who decides it is finished?
Option 04

Card, transfer, cash or cheque

The method rather than the timing. Which of these a business takes varies, and a few add a handling charge on cards. Paying by a method that leaves a record is generally worth a small cost, because a record is what a warranty claim is built on.

Ask: which methods do you take, and is there a surcharge on any of them?

Whichever arrangement a job lands on, it belongs in writing with the rest of the price. The glossary covers the words that turn up on the paperwork.

Ask What The Price Covers

A figure that names what is included, what is not, and when it is due is worth more than a lower figure that names none of them.

  • What is included
  • What is an extra
  • When it is due
