When to ask, and when to stop

Timing rather than technique. None of this is an instruction to attempt work yourself, and the second half of the page says why.

Timing, not tasks

The year, roughly

Every trade has a busy stretch, and no two have the same one. These are about when to ask rather than what to do — the specifics belong to whoever you are hiring.

The seasons move; which quarter is busy depends entirely on the trade.

Plan the year

The quiet end of most diaries. A good moment to get quotes for work you know is coming, while there is time to compare them properly.

Book ahead of the rush

Demand climbs for most outdoor and seasonal trades. If the work has a season, this is usually the edge of it — ask early rather than at the peak.

Expect longer lead times

The busiest months for a lot of businesses. Build the wait into your plans and confirm dates in writing rather than assuming them.

Tidy up the records

Close out anything outstanding, file the year's invoices and warranties, and note what wants attention next year while you still remember it.

One rule above the rest

When in doubt, do not

Nothing on this page is an instruction to attempt work yourself, and this band is the reason.

Stop and call a professional if any of these apply

The risk in service work is almost never in the part that looks difficult. It is in the part that looks easy and is not.

  • Gas, fuel or any smell of burning
  • Electricity, wiring or anything that has tripped more than once
  • Water where water should not be, or anything structural
  • Work at height, or in a confined or unlit space
  • Anything covered by a warranty, a permit or an inspection
  • Anything at all that you are unsure about
